I have had a heavy heart these past days considering the death of Chelsea King and Amber Dubois. My heart cries out to God for answers to why this would happen and I can’t help but shed tears as a mother who constantly prays for the protection of her own two daughters.

As I looked to the Bible for answers, I remembered Jeremiah 31:15

“A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children, because they are no more.” There are so many instances in the Bible when God acknowledges our pain like he does in this passage. He knows the pain of losing a child. Aren’t we all His children? Not only does God acknowledge our suffering, but he chose to experience it by coming to earth and being put to death.

He goes even further than seeing and understanding our situation, however, and does something that nobody else is qualified to do. He makes a promise that He will restore everything. For his followers, death is only a temporary state, and when death disappears, so will our pain. He makes a promise to His followers and gives us guidance for how to deal with our pain. In Jeremiah 31:16 the Lord says, “Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work, declares the Lord, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy. There is hope for your future, declares the Lord, and your children shall come back to their own country.”

During these dark and sad times, we must remember God’s promises. It is a mighty promise that God tells us he will restore us, demolish our pain, and give us new and everlasting life. In these troubled times, we must look to God for answers, because He will not disappoint us.
