I’m on my way see some dear friends of mine tie the knot this weekend in Ohio, and right now I find myself sitting in the exit row on my first flight studying the instructions for opening the emergency exit door. And at the same time in my lap sits the book 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper, a book that tells the miraculous story of when Don was declared dead after a car accident only to return to life 90 minutes later after a minister prayed over him. In the book he tells of those 90 minutes.
So I find myself thinking that this whole situation is weird.
There’s something about traveling, and especially flying, that makes me acutely aware of my mortality and shatters my invincibility complex. I find myself being strangely contemplative in these times.
In his book, Don describes his time spent in Heaven. His description of Heaven resonates in my heart so much: a place of perfect love, joy, peace, and beauty. Indescribably really. The very dwelling place of the Holy God. I can’t help but agree with Paul that “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
But Jesus promises us that we can partake in the reality of Heaven now. Jesus prayed for us in John 17:3 saying “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Knowing Jesus we are partaking in Heaven and eternal life right now. It is not something we have to wait for and hope that it will be good. We can taste and know it now.
In Heaven we will experience eternal life in its fullest and perfect state. But what a good God we serve who doesn’t make us wait for this love, joy, peace, and beauty but offers the reality of this to us everyday through His Son, Jesus Christ.
