On Easter my husband, Daniel, was due to leave to Santa Maria, CA for three weeks of training for his job as a dispatcher at Camp Pendleton.
That morning he just got off working a twelve hour shift of 7pm - 7 am. He slept for about 4 hours then it was time to get up to make a 5 hour trek up north. Time eventually got away as he was preparing things to go and by the time he was ready to leave he was exhausted. Unfortunately Daniel has a track record of falling asleep on long drives so this was now an issue. We thought about sending my daughter Alyssa with him and have her take the Amtrak back the next day. With conflicting schedules and the other important fact of her doing this alone, we decided for her not to go and that I would go instead. Within 20 minutes I was packed and we were on our way.
The thought never came across that I would be going, I didn’t schedule time off at work, didn’t do any of the long preparations of going on a trip and didn’t make any financial purchases of what we call “needed” items. I just spontaneously got ready and left.
After a few calls I managed to get the time off and all the essential things I needed was with me. The time away was very relaxing. I was able to have some quiet time to myself while Daniel was in class the next day, the stresses of life were tucked away for a couple of days and much needed time alone with Daniel allowed us to enjoy each other and talk without life’s interruptions.
My ride home two days later was wonderful. I took the Amtrak home and I was able to take in hours of California’s amazing coastline and San Bernardino’s snow peaked mountains. Absolutely breathtaking!
Sometimes God will force us to take a “time out” to enjoy life’s more important things and to enjoy the beauty of His creations. We go along life working and working and forget to take time off to relax and play. We forget to pay more attention to the things that matter the most. I was just thinking last week that taking time off from work to just relax and spend some good quality time with Daniel would be a good thing. Then I didn’t think much more about it…..I guess God thought it was a great idea. =)
Mark 6:31 (New King James Version)
31 And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”
