Most of us have MAJOR ‘family of origin’ issues (just ask our spouses)! We inherit character traits from our parents, and often unwittingly pass them on to our children. Even when we consciously reject or even rebuke them, some of the ‘baggage’ keeps hanging around. One of those family traits for me is truth-telling. Now, I’m not suggesting that my family was somehow a fountain of righteousness. Hardly! The truth-telling that went on in my house was mostly scathing, injurious and merciless. Truth was used as a weapon, not a guide. That’s what truth can be like when it is not motivated by love and executed with grace. Jesus came and showed the perfect mixture of truth and grace. To the humble and broken, he spilled mercy and acceptance liberally by creating an atmosphere where true change could take place. Error replaces truth; good can overwhelm bad. The truth in Jesus was both accessible and desirable. To the arrogant and self-righteous, he used truth like a switchblade to figuratively disembowel the religious enemies and competitors of God. Truth is more than mere words; truth is made real in our actions that speak louder than words. Learning to ‘live’ the truth presupposes that you are attempting to live selflessly and you are seeking the good of others more than your own good. Spiritual maturity is embodying the truth; when you look and sound much more like your heavenly Father than your earthly father! May we never claim to walk in more truth than we openly, clearly display with our actions!
