A good friend introduced me to the San Diego band, The Silent Comedy. Their music is very good and engaging (plus, they rock, which I like). I have yet to go to one of their shows, but my friend was describing to me how amazing their shows are. He said that the place is packed out, everyone is standing and having a great time. More incredible, he says, is how everyone seems to know all of the lyrics to their music and shouts them out the entire show. The Silent Comedy’s music seems to be written for this purpose of engaging the crowd instead of merely playing to a group of spectators.
Isn’t this supposed to be what happens when we sing together as Christians? I certainly understand the purpose behind quiet and contemplative music where we examine our hearts and seek the Lord in prayer. We certainly try to weave this into our worship services, but more importantly, we sing to profess our faith, thank God for who he is, and together, we celebrate God’s goodness in song. So singing together is not primarily about me finding God as much as it is we, together, being encourage by the presence of God and getting re-focused together on the King!
Our vision of music on Sundays at Infusion is that it would be our (not just my) praise given to our Creator. We come on Sundays, and sing in our Crowded Houses together for the purpose of corporately sharing in something special. God desires that we would participate with him in the glorification of Himself. Singing, shouting, raising hands (or a glass), yes, even jumping up and down, are something we enjoy as the Spirit engages us in raising our voices in song to him. I would encourage all of us to remember that when we come together, it is a celebration of our Lord and King. Let’s sing like we believe this.
