“Christians will do anything for Christ, except ruin their reputation.”
– Anonymous
I read this quote today for the first time and it struck a deep chord in my heart. Tonight in our Crowded House we talked about the passage in 1 Peter 2:19-25 where it speaks about Christ’s sufferings. In it Peter writes “’He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’ When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.”
There are many times in my Christian life where I’ve decided not to do something because I don’t want to look like an idiot. Sometimes this is not speaking up for what’s right, and other times it’s not taking the chance to talk to someone about Christ. The only reason I don’t is because I don’t want people to think I’m stupid.
Perhaps this is because I’m young and want everyone to still believe that I am “cool?” Or perhaps this is a commonality found in every Christian’s heart?
We don’t believe that Jesus will satisfy us even when we are mocked.
We don’t believe that it is better to please God than man.
We don’t believe Paul when he writes:
“The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment” (1 Corinthians 2:14-15).
So, while it might make us look like a fool to others, praise God that He is the judge and will look upon us and be pleased by our “foolishness.”
