"Authentic Christianity" - Dr. Gary Cass

October 3, 2021 Preacher: Gary Cass Series: Acts

Topic: Anointing, Faithfulness, Holy Spirit, Pentecost Passage: Acts 2:14–2:41

ACTS 2:14-41

Pastor Dr. Gary Cass

Augustine: I believe so I can know.

Bahnsen: Apart from faith in Christ you cannot justify the preconditions for intelligibility.

Vss.14-15; But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.

Vs 13: But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

The early Christians were persecuted because they had been successfully defamed by the persecuters and unbelievers of the day!

When God touches a person, He touches the whole man- body and soul, mind and emotions.

EDWARDS: “True religion, in great part, consists in holy affections…. The Holy Scriptures do everywhere place religion very much in the affections such as fear, hope, love, hatred, desire, joy, sorrow, gratitude, compassion, and zeal.”

Vss16-21: But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20 the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

John 10:35: The scriptures cannot be broken…

Note this initial Christian sermon is 50% direct quotes from OT prophecies.

2 Pet 1:16: For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Mark 9:7 "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!"

Eight out of the 356 predictions of the OT.

  1. THE TIME OF HIS birth (DAN 8&9)
  2. THE place OF HIS birth (MICAH 5:2)
  3. THE unique BORN HEIR. (ISA 7:14)
  4. 30 PIECES OF silver PAID. (ZECH 11:12)
  5. HE WOULD BE mocked (PS 22:7,8)
  6. HE WOULD BE crucified (JOHN 3:14)
  7. HE WOULD BE pierced (PS 22:16)
  8. HE DIES WITH THE dyed & buried WITH THE RICH. (ISA 53:9)

Jer 23:29: Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

That great day, even the promised “the last days” have begun.

Hebrews 1:2; …in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

People of all classes will be His witnesses and declare His praises.

Gen 12:3 “all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

The Kingdom of God has come and He is gathered all things in Christ

Mat 12:28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Vss. 22-36: “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ 29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

Peter, in OT prophetic fashion, brings His countrymen up on charges of covenant breaking.

Mat 23:37: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

God is completely in control, and yet you are fully responsible for your actions.

1 Cor 2:8: None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

God is in control, and even uses the sins of evil men to further His greater plan.

Vs.36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.

No one else dare to assume these two amazing offices.

It is this Jesus whom YOU crucified.

Vss. 37-14: Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Have you received His word?

Have you changed your mind about Jesus?

Has your heart been broken for your sin?

Have you made your public declaration?
