October 10, 2021 Preacher: Gary Cass Series: Acts

Topic: God's Sovereignty, Faithfulness, Community, Acts, True Christianity Passage: Acts 2:40–47

Acts 2: 40-47

Pastor Dr. Gary Cass

Infusion Church 10/10/21

Christianity is not something you can “pick up

It isn’t an intellectual curiosity for the philosophically inclined.

Nor is it an experience that thrills the heart & stirs the emotions.

It isn’t some severe religious duty.

It is utterly the supernational work of God’s Spirit.

Acts 2:43: A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs.

Acts 2:36-27: Therefore let all Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ!” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

WARNING: Not everyone who hears the truth IS convicted of their sin.

Acts 2:40: …he urged them, “Be saved from this corrupt generation.”

I Pet 1:3: By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

You have been saved from the condemnation of breaking God’s Holy Law!

Romans 8:1: There is therefore now No condemnation in Christ

You are being saved by Christ from the power of sin.

Romans 6:14: Sin shall no longer have dominion over you!

You will be saved from the presence and pollution of sin.

I John 3:2; when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

 I. Transformed Priorities

Acts 2:42: They devoted themselves…

New spiritual life is restless, growing and hungry.

1 Pet 2:2: Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—

Acts 2:46: With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house…

Mat 4:14: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

The Apostle’s Doctrine define and inform all the others so that they don’t become out of balance.

I Cor 15:3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 And last of all He appeared to me also, as to one of untimely birth.

John 3:16-18 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. 18 The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

The world desperately needs this absolutely unique Apostolic message.

Acts 4:12: Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

Psalm 19:7ff: The Law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart; the commandments of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the judgments of the LORD are true, being altogether righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. 11 By them indeed Your servant is warned; in keeping them is great reward.

Vss.46-47: With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

Christ restores us to each other.

I John 3:14: We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers.

The Greek word for fellowship is koinonia and it simply means a shared life!

Mark 10:29; Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

God gives us himself and each other in the Gospel.

Psalm 68:6: God sets the solitary in families…

“and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

I Cor 2:2; For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

The broken bread and wine constitute a visible Word.

I Cor 10:16-17: Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf.

Your prayer life that reveals the truth about your faith.

Romans 8:15-17: you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ…

Prayer is spontaneous, intense and heart felt.

Romans 8:23ff: we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies… 26… the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. 27 And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Acts 4:23-31   23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them.  24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, "Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them,  25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant,(1 )said by the Holy Spirit, "' Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain?  26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed'(1 )-  27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,  28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.  29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants(1 )to continue to speak your word with all boldness,  30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus."  31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Mat 17:19ff: Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Vs 43 A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs… And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Luke 4:18ff; “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
