"A Supernatural Church" - Dr. Gary Cass

January 2, 2022 Preacher: Gary Cass Series: Acts

Topic: Miracles & Wonders, Holy Spirit, Acts Passage: Acts 5:12–16

Acts 5:12-16
Infusion Church /  01-02-22

Acts begins with an account of Christ’s triumphant resurrection.

Acts 1:3; He presented himself alive to them [the Apostles] after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

Acts 1:9; … as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.

Now Jesus seated at the right hand of the Father and reigns over His church and the entire cosmos.

Acts 2:11-12; … [the visitors to Jerusalem for the Passover] hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?

Acts 2:37-39: Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 3:8; And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 … And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Acts 4:19; But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.

Acts 4:31: And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Acts 5:11; And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

Vs 12: Signs and wonders were done regularly by the hands of the apostles…

We must be careful not to romanticize what the early church life was like.

We also may be tempted to think miracles will somehow convince otherwise spiritually disinterested and un-spiritual minded people.

Luke 16:31; He [Abraham] said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

That’s not to say that miracles shouldn’t convince people, they should

Matt 11:20-24; Then he [Jesus] began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

This first era in the life of the church was absolutely unique.

Rev 21:14:  And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Can God still do the supernatural in the same dramatic way He did back then?” YES!

Ps 135:6; Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.

God is acting today or we would not even be here worshipping, we’d have no interest in Him.

Jer 13:23: Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots?

Then also you can do good who are accustomed to do evil.

1 Cor 12:5&6; Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone…

Acts 4:29&30; … grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

Dt 26:8; And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders.

Dt 18:15-20; “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen—…  18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.

Satan’s kingdom is judged and is being plundered and his captives set free.

Vs.14: And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women…

One of the great signs of Christ’s Kingdom was the powerful way he healed and delivered the jewish believers.

Vss.15-16: … so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them.

They like streams in the desert, healing, deliverance, and salvation flow to the twelve tribes according to the flesh as God brought forth the true New Israel of God according to the Holy Spirit.

Vs.16: The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

Luke 7:20-23; …when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’” 21 In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

Mark 16:20; And they [the apostles] went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.

Vss.12b-13: And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. 13 None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem…

God’s Holy nature has not changed, sinful human nature hasn’t changed, the true church is the same, and the world’s conflicted view of the true church remains.

Acts 2:46: And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

They were devoted to the Apostles doctrine and can’t get enough of it and the chance to be together to grow spiritually.

Acts 5:11; And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

Matthew Henry: The separation of hypocrites, by distinguishing judgments, should make the sincere cleave so much the closer to each other and to the gospel ministry.

The harvest is plentiful!

Pray for laborers and boldness and pray big prayers for God to answer.
